My name is Liz Scully. I’m a business strategist. And I’m also nomadic.

When I’m choosing the cities and countries that I’m going to spend time in, I often choose – almost always choose – a UNESCO World Heritage Site as somewhere to visit or to be part of the city I’m in.

All of the places I’ve been in the last few years are almost always UNESCO based.

All of the retreats and the intensives I set up are all in UNESCO sites. But, what I discovered is that many of my clients don’t actually know what that means.

So, let me tell you about it because it is very fabulous.

UNESCO was set up in the ‘70s.

It’s a UN initiative to create World Heritage Centres.

Places that are so important to us as humans, that they are looked after, treasured for the planet.

Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Machu Picchu in Peru are both UNESCO sites. So is the Castle in Budapest or Hampi – my absolute favorite place on Earth – which is this beautiful series of cities from the 15th century in India. Chichen Itza in the Yucatan. All UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In fact, often I plan my entire travel around making sure that I spend time in these places.

They’re architecturally important, they are culturally important.

There are also UNESCO Specialist Areas for things like the Great Barrier Reef and parts of the rainforest. Sadly, not all of the rainforest which would be delightful.

So if you’re planning a trip see if there’s a UNESCO site there. I think there are a couple of hundred worldwide. Certainly seems to be more than that. And many big, particularly capital cities will have three or four.

Anywhere that is vital to the way humans have developed will be a UNESCO site.

There is always something interesting to look at there. Plus you’ll probably get great Instagram photographs.

And you’ll have that really great feeling that you are connected to a part of humanity.

That doesn’t always happen on your trips and your holidays, but

when you’re stood somewhere that is a UNESCO site, there’s always that feeling of connection.

So, do look for those and also check out my Instagram @RethinkCentral I often post pictures of where I am and often UNESCO sites I’ve visited. Go, check me out there.
