Years ago, one of my physiotherapists told me a story that has always stuck with me. Because I think there’s a kernel of something so true for everything we do in coaching and marketing and service providing.
So here’s the story my physiotherapist told me:
Bear in mind that inside a physiotherapist’s office, you’re in quite a vulnerable position. You’re often stripped down to your underwear and potentially painful muscles stuff is being done.
So, to lighten this moment, my physiotherapist used to tell me little stories. In this case, she said that she’d been bra shopping. If you’re a gent, just bear with me on this because it’ll make sense.
Anybody who regularly wears a bra knows that there is this horror when you realize you’re wearing the wrong size. And they say that almost all of us are wearing the wrong size.
So, my physiotherapist being aware that this is a good thing to fix, went along to the fancy department store with the bra that she wanted to replace and said
‘I think I’m wearing the wrong size.’
And the motherly, matronly type came into the changing room and measured her in that kind of hauteur sort of way, filled full of grandeur. She looked at it, she looked at the bra’s label and she said ‘Madam, you’re not wearing the wrong size.’
She was like ‘But it doesn’t fit anymore.’ And she said
‘Madam, it is OLD.’
And that’s what had happened. The bra had simply, over time, stretched. And this saggy, old piece of material really wasn’t doing the job in the same old way as before.
The reason this stuck in my mind was A) partly, we’ve all been there. That’s a very human moment. You think you want something new, somebody crushes you. That’s not good.
But there’s also B) the fact that for me now,
I see so many parallels with people that have not upgraded their strategy.
– Because I’m a strategist, I see everything in terms of strategy. – They haven’t upgraded their strategy for the current state of the world.
They haven’t tightened things up. They haven’t viewed things. They haven’t looked at their website to see whether or not it’s working with what they currently offer.
I know I’m also responsible for this, I certainly need to upgrade my website and you probably do too, but your strategy probably needs a tune, too.
Obviously, I would love to invite you for one of my deep-dive strategy sessions but if that’s a bit much for you right now and you just need a little bit of soothing that yes, you’re doing the right thing it just needs to be freshened up, come to one of my Q&As, I’d love to help you
And I will not comment on the state of your undergarments in any way.
