What’s the difference between strategy and tactics? This may sound pedantic but there really is a difference.

I am a business strategist. Which means that we look at the big picture.

If you want to achieve something, say you want to double your income in three years, we look at the strategy that will achieve that. You will have more reach, you will need to be more visible, and you will need to be in more sales conversations because you need to have more sales. So that is your strategy of how we achieve that.

Tactics are the nitty gritty about how we do that.

Say you have a strategy of creating Facebook ads and creating big funnels. That’s your strategy. Your tactics are exactly how you set up your ads.

For instance, one of the lovely little quick things you can do on Facebook: The algorithm, as we know, doesn’t show everything to everyone but if you have a popular post that lots of people comment on, all of those people and their friends will see the next post that you make.

So often if I’m about to do a launch and I want a bit more of an organic reach in the weeks coming up to it, I will ask a question that is super easy for everyone to answer.

As you know I read a lot of books so often I ask ‘What are you reading at the moment?’ ’What would you recommend?’

This has a lot of advantages. First of all, I love reading the answers. Second, I get great advice and suggestions on books. Three, Facebook sees maybe 100 people or 20 people answering and all the back and forth. It sees that what I write is particularly impressive and will show it organically to more people. This is helpful. That is a tactic. Being on Facebook and launching there is a strategy.

You want both strategy and tactics.

Some people are fantastic tacticians and rubbish strategists. Some people are great strategists and have no tactics. You want a mix of both.

One of the things that are fantastic about being in a Mastermind group is you will have both. You’ll get good strategy and you’ll hear the ‘I tried this and it was amazing’ sorts of tactics.

A good business looks at the big focus on strategy and uses tactics to get what they want from strategy.

If you’re just using tactics you’re just leaping about trying quick little fixes.

You need strategy and then you use your tactics.

And if you have questions about your own business come along to one of my regular Q&A sessions. There’s a box below just drop your email in there. And it would be lovely to see you.
