My name is Liz Scully. I’m a business strategist. But before I did this I had several other careers.
I worked in film for 20 years, but my original training was as a jeweller and silversmith. And those two careers are almost diametrically opposed.
As a jeweller, as a silversmith, as a creator of art it’s just you and the thing and you can make it as beautiful as you like. You know exactly when it’s finished. Because it’s only you making that decision.
In film, in television it is completely different. What we used to say there was: ”On this day, for this shoot this is as good as it gets. This was the best we could do.” Because it’s a collaboration. It is working together. And on that confluence of events and money and time and delivery we could make it as lovely as it is.
Now I believe that my film experience is much more as how we run business. Because that feeling of the artist creating the perfect moment, if you follow photography that Cartier-Bresson ‘defining moment’, that moment when you know it’s art that you can wait years for that you can faff about and get perfect.
If you’re running your business like that you’re not going to make any money.
Whereas if you’re taking that film feeling of ”Here we are and at this moment this is as good as it gets and that’s fantastic.” that’s going to move you forwards and produce amazing results.
Collaboration, even if you’re a solopreneur you’re still collaborating with your social media fans and followers, your people that are helping you. I outsource lots of stuff and there’s wonderful people that work with me in my business.
For us, perfection would kill us. It would absolutely stop us dead. But good enough and close enough for how it is today, that is what keeps us moving. That beautiful artistic moment, save it for the work in your studio.
If you want to do well at business collaborate and work from that feeling of ‘it’s good enough’. And good enough at your level is going to be so much better than most people’s perfect waiting for a day that never happens.
