Overwhelm. What a nightmare.

It happens to all of us now and again. Sometimes it happens from too many ideas. Sometimes it happens from just too much going on at the same time.

When it happens to my clients, here’s what I tell them to do.

My name is Liz Scully. I’m a business strategist. And frankly, I know overwhelm far too well.

So, it’s really simple. This technique is so simple to do.

When you feel overwhelm, switch modes. So, if you’re all down in the details, all that micro stuff, you’ve got to do this and you’ve got to do this, switch to a macro view.

Zoom out so that you can see all of the stuff you have to do but only from a very high level. Yes, you have to shoot some videos. Yes, you have to finish a course. Yes, you have to do x, y and z.

And then once that feels calm, and you’re on top of all of those things, maybe that itself, feels overwhelming. Then go back to the micro level. Okay, so those are the things I have to do. Little of x, a little of y, a little of z. And do tiny micro things to move each of those along.

I know it sounds simple, but truly, this works no end. Switching between that macro and micro level, that will allow you to do so much more. Because whenever you feel overwhelmed, go big. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed by big, go small. Between those two.

It’s what I always used to recommend for the people on my crew when I was working in film. Sometimes the number of shots would be overwhelming. So look at the sequences, look at all you have done. And then take it back to the small levels, exactly where the light should be in this shot.

It’s a really simple technique. I assure you it works.

And I would love to hear how you get on with it. Because this time of year, it is so easy to feel overwhelmed. Let me know how you go.

And if you’ve got a moment, come along to a Q&A. Tell me in person. I would love to hear. And if you are feeling overwhelmed and aren’t quite sure how to get out of the current feeling – come along, and maybe I can give you some more tips.

Speak to you soon and see you on the Q&A.
