When is a Mastermind group not a Mastermind group? This is one of my absolute pet peeves.

My name is Liz Scully. I’m a business strategist. I run Masterminds, I train people how to run their own Masterminds and I run Masterminds for other people.

So a misnamed Mastermind is particularly annoying for me.

Often you see it because there is no governing body for Masterminds. Although one day I will fix that. I plan eventually to create the Federation of Mastermind Excellence or FOME as it will be. And I plan to be President of the Federation just because that sounds extremely cool and I grew up on Star Wars. But, before I create FOME there is no governing body for Masterminds. So, things that aren’t Masterminds get called Masterminds.

And the one that annoys me beyond measure is

10,000 people in a Facebook group being called a Mastermind. That’s not a Mastermind.

A Mastermind is a small group of people who are with you for the long haul, who understand you, who are guided by a coach who will bring you to accountability, to time management and to the wonderful results of working together in a small group that is your home from home. That’s your little hut in the village of the work that you’re doing. These are your people. This is your hearthstone. These are where you start.

You don’t get that with 10,000 people in a Facebook group.

Just occasionally, you’ll meet people that have created a bond within a much bigger group. And they’ve created their own real Mastermind in there. But they don’t realise that perhaps. When they’ll say ‘But my Mastermind group is great. It’s 10,000 people in it and me and the other 4 people we have a great time.’

See, they’ve actually made themselves a Mastermind because it’s natural and human for us to gather together. And to have people that are with us for a long time.

An accountability buddy – not a Mastermind.

          A workshop – not a Mastermind.

An email reply system – not a Mastermind.

You need that regular meeting.

You can do a Mastermind in a weekend setting just that one-off but there will still be follow-up, there will still be a feeling of that. Doing a full day of Masterminding in-person – that’s true Masterminding. That is different from the online programs that I run.

Masterminding involves real people, involved long-term, in getting change done.

And they are wonderful. They’re great for your clients if you run them yourselves and they are amazing if you’re in them yourself.

I am obviously, as you can tell, a Mastermind evangelist because they’ve changed my business out of all recognition. And they can do the same for your business.

If you have any questions about Masterminds or indeed are thinking of running your own Mastermind then come along to one of my Q&A’s. There’s a link below.

And do check out my Mastering Mastermind program. It’s the flagship program for my business, all about how to run fantastic Masterminds. It’s got hundreds of happy alums. It’d be great if you’re one of them.
