So a Mastermind group? Or one-to-one coaching? Or a combination of both? What is right for you?
My name is Liz Scully. I’m a business strategist. And a Mastermind evangelist. I run Masterminds for myself, and for other people and I train people how to run their own amazing groups.
Masterminds are – as you know – a small group program that will support you to produce more, to achieve your goals, and to have accountability and support as you do that. But that’s also what one-to-one coaching will do.
When do you choose one over another?
Let’s start with a kind of slightly more complex issue. In my Mastermind programs, I have a small amount of one-to-one coaching because all of us need a little coaching now and again. I start my Mastermind programs with a deep dive session where we set the parameters of what we’ll be achieved during the Mastermind program.
What are the big goals? What do you want to achieve two, three, maybe even five years from now? A year from now, where do you want to be?
Then we work backwards with all of the detail. So if you want to be achieving an extra $60,000 or an extra $100,000 or an extra $300,000 five years from now, how much do you need to be earning more at the end of the year? What do you need to put in place now?
Just seeing as we’re talking about it, what you need to do is have more sales calls. That’s the answer to making more money. Always, in any business. More sales calls will produce more cash. If you’re in more sales conversations, that’s where the money will come from.
But once we’ve set those parameters, then we start the Masterminding program, and we now know what we need to achieve when and how it’s going to fit together.
In my Mastermind programs, we have a one-to-one session in the middle of the program and then one at the end.
The one in the middle is to re-orientate us. Just to make sure that you’re on track. There’s that old cliche about ”It takes a lot to change the direction of the ocean liner.” Well, that’s what that middle one is. To make sure the ocean liner is heading towards the big goals. Have your goals pivoted? Have you pivoted? Are you happy? Are you getting the support you need?
The session at the end is to make sure that whether or not you choose to renew with your Mastermind, – which most of my clients do choose to renew – but, have you achieved what you wanted? Are you orientated for the next step?
So there’s always an element of one-to-one and Mastermind together.
In one-to-one coaching, you probably have very specific goals.
You do in Masterminds, but perhaps you’re looking more at the psychological, more at the mindset. Perhaps your one-to-one coaching is shorter. Usually, it’s 12 sessions or three months or even just a monthly session that’ll keep you on track.
Sometimes you’re doing mindset work. Sometimes you’re doing more personal work that you don’t want to do in front of a group. So that’s the kind of work.
But you do want to avoid that kind of Woody Allen being inside psychoanalysis for the rest of his natural life, lying on a sofa for 40 years. You don’t want to be in that situation. Apart from anything, it’s very expensive. And, how do you know it’s done?
So which do you choose?
Do you want one-to-one coaching? Do you want Masterminding?
For me, I normally have a specific thing that I’m working on in any year. Perhaps, I’m growing my audience or I’m looking at my mindset or I’m improving my skills in copywriting or selling or some other one area.
And also I’m working on a personal thing. Maybe I want to change a particular aspect of how I’m dealing with something or just learn a new skill.
So for me, I’m usually in at least one Mastermind and doing one-to-one coaching.
They work together super well.
It’s the same for many of my clients. Sometimes they coach with me and Mastermind with me. Sometimes they’re working with someone else on personal stuff, as well as in business.
So the two work together really well.
But it’s about what you want. If you’re in actual pain, whether it’s existential or physical then you want to work very closely with someone right now, intensively and get that sorted.
If you had pain in your knee, you’d go to the physio every week till that had changed. Then maybe you’d then implement a longer-term exercise program. And you just have the odd correction now and again.
It’s kind of the same if you’re dealing with existential angst or a big personal issue. You can dive deep, you can be supported and then a group might come later. So this is very much a personal thing.
But it doesn’t have to be an either/or.
It’s about what you want to achieve.
And as always with coaching, it’s about being clear about your priorities, clear about your goals. And also not overloading yourself. You want to have the time and the space to do that.
If Masterminding is on your agenda – either running them or joining them – then follow the link below. And let’s get on a call and talk about whether or not these things are a good fit for you right now.
And if you just have a general question about running a business or strategy, then come along to one of my Q&A calls. It’d be lovely to see you there.
