When you’re coaching people, do you sometimes find that they start all-in on the plan and over time they become a little bit cautious about it, they begin to doubt themselves?
This is something I see quite often in Masterminds, particularly my year-long programs. We start super clear and super fired up, everyone’s on board with the strategies we’re talking about and then perhaps April, May people begin to get a little cautious about this.
Now, I believe this is standard human behaviour. And the way I think about it is crossing a bridge.
The side that we’re on at the moment, that’s the safety, that’s everything that we’ve done right now. And we boldly step forward looking at the other bank and we climb onto the bridge and we stride forward and everything’s great, we can see the big future, everything is together.
But as you walk along that bridge you get to the middle and you’re equidistant between change and the way you were and at that point you’re in the middle, it’s cold, you’re a long way from where you feel safe, you haven’t yet arrived where you want to be and that’s difficult. And that’s when doubt sets in.
But I found that when I talk to clients about this, about the fact that you’re on a bridge and you’re building that moment from where you were to where you want to be, because you can turn around and go back, of course you can.
But you know what was on the other bridge and all the reasons that made you step onto the bridge and move to the other side, all of those are still there. Nothing has changed. If you get tired or cold feet or just worn out then going back means nothing has changed.
Whereas if you’re brave and you go forwards to the new thing, you don’t know what’s on the other side yet, you can always go back to the other side of the bridge but the new stuff that’s where the change and the growth and the excitement is.
So I encourage you to do what I do with my clients, which is encourage them across that bridge.
And I really hope that this is useful. We’re going to be covering quite a few of these in this blog. So, check back for more and if you’re interested in joining a Mastermind then click over to one of our many Mastermind pages.
And if you have questions about your own business come along to one of my regular Q&A sessions. There’s a box below just drop your email in there. And it would be lovely to see you.
