You know those moments where you have to do something in your business that is just a drag. Never mind business, just in your life that is just a little tedious to manage. Well, when my clients come to me in that situation, I have a little tip for them.
My name is Liz Scully. I’m a business strategist.
And here’s what I suggest you ask yourself when facing a task that you’d rather avoid.
Framing it in terms of ’Ugh, I have to do this thing. Oh, I don’t really want to do it.’ That makes it difficult, right?
Whereas if you put it in terms of ‘I know I have to do this thing,
what would make it DELICIOUS?’
And I specifically use the word ‘delicious’. Not nice or lovely or acceptable but
delicious – as in something that you really want to do.
I spent a couple of years trying to learn Spanish. I’m dyslexic and learning a second language turns out to be very, very difficult if you’re dyslexic and above 5 years old. But I decided I was really going to go solidly at this.
I know I’ve had many problems with it over the years. So, I sat down and thought, ‘Well, if I’m going to do this thing, what would make it delicious?’
And what made it delicious was ‘What if I lived in Spanish-speaking countries, and I had daily sessions with a teacher 1-2-1, so I wasn’t in a crowd and I wasn’t aware how slow I would be’.
And that’s exactly what I did and it did make it delicious. I made sure I only took speaking gigs in Spanish countries – Colombia, Barcelona and Guatemala – and I did a lot of language training there.
1-2-1, sitting on a rooftop with volcanoes in the background – and it was delicious. I still didn’t learn Spanish, but I put the work in.
If you have to do your taxes, what would make it delicious? If you have to sit through another tedious conference, what would make it delicious?
Would that be making sure you get a reward afterwards?
Would it be staying in a beautiful hotel? Would it be something that you have just really wanted to upgrade?
Ask yourself ‘What would make it delicious?’ and I bet ideas come to you.
It’s not always possible. Doing your taxes is normally tedious. But in my business, I have an accountant, I have a bookkeeper and I have a VA who photographs my receipts. I don’t have to do very much of that stuff, because for me, taxes are not delicious.
But with a bookkeeper, the VA, and the accountant, I don’t have to do very much of it. And that is delicious for me.
What would make the thing you’re avoiding delicious?
