There’s a change coming to the coaching industry.
The whole teaching and training industry really. It’s something I talk about with my colleagues a great deal, but somehow, despite the conversation having gone on for 18 months or so behind closed doors, we’re not talking about it publicly.
This is what we in the coaching industry are concerned by:
Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to access wonderful quality courses at very low prices. Great places like Masterclassing, CreativeLive, Skillshare and Udemy have
beautiful courses that are ever cheaper.
On Udemy you can buy a whole ‘coaching’ certification program for 10 bucks. And that means that there’s a rush to the bottom for prices. There are obviously great places like CreativeLive that run beautiful content, but it means that
our clients are all used to consuming courses at very, very low prices.
That’s not great if you make your money from selling courses.
A lot of the people that are now still saying ‘make your course evergreen‘, ‘I’ve made a fortune from it’ – they did, but they did it 2 or 3 years ago. The way they’ve dealt with making cash is not the way that is going to work now.
Because when your clients are used to paying almost nothing for a course they’re not going to pay you, a lesser well-known person, a lot of money for your course. Even though your course is great, you have specialist knowledge, you know exactly what you’re talking about.
But here’s what people WILL pay for:
instead of a passive learning experience where they sit there quietly absorbing, not able to ask questions, nothing but a Facebook group to do that or a Q&A once a month, what they will pay for is community. For a feeling of being in it together.
So, running the course live: that’s why I run Mastering Mastermind as a 3-day live program. Because when you are learning and you’re with someone who can answer your questions instantly, it’s also the moment where you can realise that actually you didn’t have that question but it’s great that you heard someone else ask it.
This is where learning happens. This is what clients are paying for. So this huge change is coming.
At – I have to say – the same time as there’s going to be a worldwide global business crash. This isn’t alarmist, all of my finance friends have told me for years that in about a year from now and I’m in the middle of Q2 2019 so kind of about April next year there is going to be a serious financial crash.
I don’t know why they can see it coming, they can’t stop it but there’s a general feeling there’s a slowdown. I’ve certainly noticed it in my sales, perhaps you’ve noticed it in yours, it’s harder to get clients who are hard-pressed to part with their money till they are certain.
What people WILL pay for is for community and that access feeling.
So, what I’m making sure all the people who work with me in business strategy Masterminds have is a very clear path to the money.
That they’ve built a really beautiful set-up so that they are in great shape for when the crash begins.
Who knows if it’s going to be a little slump or it’s going to be a full-on 2008 set-up again. But either way,
knowing that you’ve built in community to what you’re doing is hugely important.
