One of the questions, I am asked most often is how to choose a Mastermind group. Because of course, there are many out there.

When I talk about how you have to have a coach that knows what they’re doing, people’s initial and obvious question is: How do I know that?

So I’m going to give you a few tips as to how to choose.

They are going to seem quite obvious because somehow when it comes to the large sums of money around some Masterminds, people kind of lose their heads. So bare with me if you’re thinking, ‘Obviously I’m going to do that’.

First of all, check that the Mastermind group has run before.

There are two ways to go on.

If it’s brand new, make sure they’re trained.

If it’s been running for a while, just look at some of the feedback. Not the feedback on their website because obviously, people are going to choose fantastic testimonials.

Just see if there is a general Google search that throws up some bad vibes around it. Is it known as a rip-off? See if you’re in any Facebook groups with some of the people who’ve done that program and what people might say.

Check out the social media of the coach.

Make sure that you like the coach’s communication style.

I mean with me for instance, if you don’t like swearing then really we are not going to make great Mastermind buddies. So, see if that’s ok. Look at the panoply of it.

Do you like their voice? Because if they annoy you in a 2-second video then they are going to be unbearable in a 2-hour Mastermind.

So, is there bad vibes around the program. Do you like the coach? Has it run before? But also just see how you feel about it.

Look at the terms and conditions. Is there a refund policy? Can you change your mind? Do people join in the middle of a program?

Is it specific enough?

As in, does it have a really close theme? Or is it a sort of general, kind of something of a mush? So you don’t know exactly what you’re designed to do. Are the outcomes clear?

Most importantly, is it difficult to get into?

Is there an application process? Is there some form of curation? Because if there isn’t, if you simply press the button and buy, then there is nothing to stop people that aren’t a great fit from being together.

Even when there is talk of making it a good fit for people, sometimes all that means is they’ll take your money after the application and they’re not really curating.

For instance, with me not only do we take an application form, we have a chat online to make sure that everything’s great in zoom. We then sit down as a company and check that everyone’s a good fit. This is something I teach in Mastering Mastermind.

Curation is the key to a good Mastermind.

If someone isn’t a good fit it doesn’t mean they’re a bad person or a terrible person in any way shape or form. It just means they’re not a good fit for that group. So sometimes I put them on a waitlist.

Sometimes they’re not a good fit for group work and I work with them one-to-one. Sometimes what they’re doing isn’t something that is my specialisation and I refer them out to a colleague.

It’s all very simple in my world, but curation is key.

Anytime I’ve been in a not-great Mastermind – and I’ve been in many – it’s because the curation wasn’t strong enough.

Another thing to check is the refund policy.

In my business, there are no refunds. So once you’re in, you’re in.

Part of that deal is because my ‘Hotel California’ policy is based around you have to be sure. If you aren’t certain this is for you then… don’t join.

Most people aren’t that ballsy about it. Most people do have a refund policy of some sort. So find out what it is.

What if you can’t make most of the sessions? What if you only make them occasionally?

I require 80% attendance because that way the group forms into a beautiful bonded group. Other people don’t necessarily do that. So sometimes you don’t know the other people in the group.

Find out how big the group is.

Because being in a group of 4 or 6 will give you the perfect Mastermind setup. 10 or 12 can also work if you’re in two groups.

But if you’re in a group of 50 people and your Mastermind calls are actually just Q&As, that’s not so good. And sometimes that can cost you $10 to $15,000. That’s a nightmare.

So look at all of this. Choose very carefully.

And here’s my final suggestion:

Make sure that you can speak to the person who’s going to be running the Mastermind. Because sometimes, on very big Masterminds, all the sales is done by a sales team and you can’t get to speak to the big-name.

Imagine you were going to do something with Tony Robbins, for example. I know he has a Mastermind at $100k and one at $200k. Well, obviously your chances of speaking to him if you’re ‘only’ paying $100k are very small but I bet if you asked at $200k ’I’d just like just 30 seconds with Tony.’ I bet they’d arrange it.

So find out how it all works.

Don’t go with your gut. Go with a full set of information and your gut.

If you’re interested in joining one of my Masterminds, hop over to the info page and drop your name in the waitlist. Then as soon as we open, you’ll have the first chance to apply. And you’ll also get the first crack at the early bird pricing.

Thanks for your time and see you soon.
