My name is Liz Scully and I’m a business strategist.

But my very first career and in fact

my very first degree was in jewellery and silversmithing design.

So I know an awful lot about the jewellery industry.

In fact, when I was going to business school it was part of my jewellery degree. I was taught by Bob Rirsch who is this wonderful setter who worked for Cartier doing really beautiful work and teaching economics on the side. He taught us all sorts of very helpful things.

One of them – the thing that really stuck in my mind – was one day he was explaining how the diamond trade worked and brought in some diamonds to show what was happening.

He explained that diamonds are created by pressure.

Stress. You take trees and you compress them for millions of years and they become coal. Obviously, you can start fires and keep everyone warm with that. But if you compress them for a few more million years, you end up with diamonds.

The clearer the diamond, the more compression that has happened to them. But they’re still coal at heart.

And as he explained this, he took out a diamond and fixed it to a little support on the desk. Then he said

‘They really are still coal. Whatever it looks like it is, in essence, its basic nature.’

And then he set fire to the diamond. It was amazing. It burnt!

It was truly one of the most extraordinary things I have ever seen. It burnt with a green, very bright flame. And there was so much excitement in that room because it felt so transgressive to set fire to a diamond.

But this is a really important thing for all of us, in everything we do. If you look at the essence of everything, when it comes right down to it

we can change how things look but their true nature is always the same.

And that’s very exciting.

So marketing is helping people make good choices. And business plans are helping you get clear on your goals.

Just like a diamond or a piece of coal is basically a piece of wood, all of the things that we work together as coaches helping other people do,

they’re just ideas till they are implemented.

So share with me that wonderful image of a diamond on fire. Make sure if you own diamonds that they are in a fireproof safe because they WILL burn.

And if you have questions about your business, please come along to one of my Q&As. Particularly, if you are a jeweller and you’d like to talk about how to make more cash. Or whatever you do, do come, it would be lovely to see you.

Business is extraordinary. And it can be incredibly good fun – just like that economics lesson.
