Did you ever have that feeling that you’re slightly overwhelmed by things that are happening to you? Moving a little too quickly. I know I do. I travel as part of my lifestyle. I’m a nomad. I’m always moving.

Sometimes when I switch countries or I come back from a conference or I finish speaking at a conference I’m a little bit discombobulated the next day, maybe the next two days. And gradually over time, I learned that what I needed was an assimilation day. I actually mark it on my calendar like that.

You need time to absorb change, take in all that’s happened and adjust to the new.

Whenever I have a day’s worth of travel, I put a day of assimilation afterwards. And by assimilation, all I mean is that I don’t book clients. I don’t work that day. I just allow the good stuff to seep into me from whatever’s just happened.

Flying is a very easy process. But if you change continents or hemispheres or countries or hell, even towels there’s a lot of new sensory data that’s come to you. Your body is probably physically quite tired, but you’ve also had a lot of unusual experiences.

Even if you do it often, flying is not a normal thing to do to your body. Neither is driving cross-country, neither is being on a bus for a long period. So allowing your body time to do that.

Allowing your subconscious time to get used to the new temperature, to the new feeling of the city, even just the water coming out of the taps or in the coffee. Whatever it is you need time to assimilate that.

When I started adding that into my diary as an automatic, as soon as I booked flights in goes the assimilation day.

The bigger the thing, the more assimilation you need.

I’m on retreat in Cartagena at the moment and I’ve got three days of assimilation booked next week because having run this wonderful retreat, I know I’m going to need some downtime. Plus, I’m also switching to a different country. So there’s like a double set of assimilation.

But once I started adding that, just time to catch your breath, time to breathe, the same way as in yoga, you have a little period at the end lying down doing savasana, that’s really important.

So, next time you book a flight make sure you put assimilation in. And if you’ve got some flights booked go back and add some downtime afterwards.

I know it’s not always possible. But wherever you can, assimilation is a good thing.
