3 ways to tell you’re in the wrong job
Does a horrible almost fearful sensation creep into your belly on Sunday evening?
Perhaps it feels like a bit of a very distant panic, or, sometimes, it’s as strong as nausea. If that’s familiar, then it’s not hard to figure out your stress is job related – and it’s time to make a change.
It’s nice when it’s glaringly obvious (although the physical manifestations are awful), but too many people have convinced themselves that job dissatisfaction is the norm – and nothing to worry about. It’s what everyone feels, right? Wrong.
Your job should hold a lot of satisfaction for you. You should be able to say, “I can’t imagine doing anything else!”
But, no matter how much you justify your work loathing, you might be in the right industry, you may even be on the right path – you could just be in the wrong place. Here are three easy ways to tell if you’re in the wrong job.
Your job doesn’t match your goals
This one is pretty easy to figure out, as long as you know what your goals are. But, it’s also a catch-22; if you feel an overwhelming discomfort about your job and you’re not sure why – then that’s your cue to examine your goals.
You’re stagnating and bored
If you sit down at your desk and have zero stimulation day after day, then you’re going nowhere. If you can spend hours playing solitaire, or checking your social media pages, then you’re not sure not growing. And if you’re not challenged, dissatisfaction will take over – if it hasn’t already.
They could never pay you enough
If a raise wouldn’t be enough to make you happy, or half the year off still wouldn’t cut it – then you’re clearly in the wrong place. Unfortunately, too many people are stuck in this sort of job, but they feel trapped because they’re not convinced they’ve got options. You have, really it doesn’t have to be like this.
You may not have the privilege of walking out of your job the next time your boss makes a passive aggressive comment – most people don’t. But, you can empower yourself so that you can seize opportunities. Start today.
Remember what you’re worth. Bad jobs tend to beat down your self-esteem, and you’ve got to fight against that. Consider re-working your CV just so you can see all the incredible things you’ve achieved. While you’re at it, take some time to clean it up, it’ll come in handy sooner than you realise.
Do the work to make changes in your life. If you’re stagnating in your job, there’s no reason for head hunters to come beating down your door. Your job may not deserve you, but if you want a new one, you’ll need to up your game.
Create a positive space. Instead of letting your work control your personal life, let it go when you step out the office. It doesn’t matter what unimaginable things happened to you today; you’ve got to let it go because it’s killing you on the inside if you carry it around. Make a happy place outside of work to boost your mood.
