HOPING THE GROUP IS A MAGIC PILL: You have to do the work as well
This should be stating the obvious, but just being in a Mastermind will not magically grow your business, you have to actually do the work as well. The Mastermind will keep you on track, energised and be there for you for the down days as well as cheerlead for you on the big successes. But the results depend on you doing the work. Are you ready? If you’re not – no amount of Masterminding can do it for you. Be ready, and want support and this is the fastest way to get results.
2
NOT BEING REALLY SELECTIVE: Don’t be blinded by the hype
It’s easy to get caught up in the sales and marketing for a new Mastermind particularly if it’s a big name coach. But before you join, ask yourself these questions.
- Who is the coach?
Do you trust them and want to work with them long term?
- Who are the other members of the group?
Do they seem like people you can work with?
Are they at the same business level as you? If they’re very far behind you, or much further ahead it’s not a good fit.
- What are the aims of the group?
And do those match what you want to do?
- What’s the feel of the group – is it serious or fun?
- How long does it run for and on what day?
- Are goals rigorously enforced or is it ok if you miss a few now and then?
- Are you Masterminding on ideas or there just for accountability?

THE GROUP’S TOO BIG: So there’s no time to dig deep
Mastermind groups work best in small groups – I teach my Mastermind coaches to aim for no more than 6 in a group. There needs to be enough time for an update, feedback on your questions and goals setting. If there’s 15 people and one hour to get through people… it’s just not going to happen well. Some people won’t be heard at all.
I’ve heard of groups where a bell is rung after each person – you get 5 minutes and that’s your lot. For me, that’s next to useless – it must work for some people, but in my groups accountability is about discussion, not simply blurting your goals before the buzzer goes. Also doesn’t bell ringing make you think ‘Pavlov’s Mastermind’? Wrong.
4
YOU JUST DON’T HAVE TIME: You can only make a few meetings
If you’re not sure you can make 80 to 90% of the sessions it’s not the group for you – or you’re not ready for the level of commitment of a Mastermind. Consistency is really important. It builds trust in the group and it also says to your subconscious you’re ready to hit your goals.
5
IGNORING YOUR INTUITION: It’s not going to be magically ok
If you’re not feeling great about the group at the beginning of the mastermind – you should listen to your intuition. Hoping for the best is not going to make things better if it’s a bad fit.
The police say that most people who have a violent crime happen to them have an inkling something bad was about to happen before hand. If people as un-woowoo as the police are telling you to listen to your intuition… then you really should.

What on earth is a Mastermind Group?
Glad you asked! The principle is very simple: at their core Masterminds are just small teams that meet regularly, share their wisdom with each other and set goals for each person to be done by the next meeting. Really successful groups are usually run by a coach who facilitates and coaches to ensure great results.
So a Mastermind is just a meeting?
Well yes, but in the same way that one-to-one coaching is just a conversation. There’s deep power in having a group hold you accountable, give support and meet over a long period. That longevity of support puts them in a different league to most coaching or training. When led effectively by a skilled facilitator and coach, they’re utterly transformative.
I’ve found Masterminds I’m in give me the fast track to business growth, deep friendships and more support than I ever thought possible. Running Masterminds, I see the same thing over and over with clients. Plus I earn tens of thousands of dollars a month through my Mastermind program. Even someone brand new to Mastermind can put together a small group of just 6 people can bring in an additional $3000 a month quickly.
